Seo Contest at IIIT Hyderabad

All you need to know about the contest SEOContestAtIITHyderabad

Day 6 – Status reports

I let the site settle down in search engines for three days, and here’s what’s going on at this time.

  • It’s dancing like a mofo in Google. Right now it’s buried somewhere at the bottom of the 7th page (from an US IP), but had it on the second page yesterday and fifth page two days ago…
  • It’s on the front page on Bing — the Indian page reports it on 8th spot, my US tool says 10th. It’s been there for a couple of days, so I guess it stopped dancing.\
  • Duckduckgo picked it up, I’m on the front page for SEOContestAtIIITHyderabad too.

Front page spots aren’t much of an achievement, since the competition is very low and frankly most of these guys don’t seem to know what they are doing.

I still haven’t built any links, I’ll probably start off slowly with some social bookmarking tomorrow.

By the way, Hyderabad seems to be quite a nice city. I don’t know a lot about the Indian culture, but I liked this documentary. Enjoy!

Day 3 – Things work as planned

I’m on the front page for the keyword on Bing and still dancing on 3rd-4th in Google. No rankings yet on Duckduckgo, but I guess it’s a matter of time till they pick it up.

It’s funny that Google ranks this on top page for “SEO Contest at IIIT Hyderabad” and not for SEOContestAtIIITHyderabad (without commas) — I should “train” it to know that it’s one and the same thing 😀

I don’t have access to an Indian IP to track the exact standings. SerpAttack, for instance, reports that I’m on 7th spot in Bing, but the results on the contest page show me on 10th. It doesn’t make a difference yet, because my entry for SEOContestAtIIITHyderabad is still dancing in both SE’s, but some time towards the end of next week I will want to see some more precise results.

I should also add that I haven’t done ANY off-page optimization yet. All current ranks are due to on-page factors (which aren’t by far optimal either, lol) and, of course, me being awesome :P. I still haven’t thought of a linking strategy — might do it some time next week.

Keep in touch!

First impressions and progress on the SEO contest

So you know I joined the SEO contest yesterday. I registered this blog on and wrote a first post, the “Hello world” type of article, so to say.

Then I pulled some “magic tricks” to get it indexed by Google. Nothing fancy — just a blast of “whois” type of sites on a domain I then 301’ed to the main URL. Google picked it up within a few hours, and Bing was a bit lazier but ended up indexing it after 16 hours or so. I still don’t know what duckduckgo is and how it works — needless to say, it didn’t index it yet.

Right now it’s on the second page in Google and second page in Bing.

Given that I’m not allowed to have more than 10 pages and/or posts, and there are 20 days left, I’ll post daily for 3-4 more days and save the last posts for later. Or not, I’m known to change moods frequently 🙂

Anyways, keep in touch!

SEO Contest Sponsored by Microsoft and IIIT Hyderabad

The International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) in Hyderabad organizes an SEO contest to celebrate something. The information is a bit fuzzy, but so far I’ve managed to find out that

  • The contest ends on February 23.
  • The prizes amount to $200-ish and the pot is growing. They probably haven’t gathered all their sponsors yet.
  • Microsoft is sponsoring this, so rankings on Bing (eek!) will be taken into account too.
  • You have to also rank on a search engine I’ve never heard before (hands up if you know what is. Thought so.
  • There are no restrictions on the methods used to rank the entry page 🙂 I wonder how many people will try to blast their pages with junk and hope for the best.
  • Not many people have joined, and there are like three weeks left.
  • Given that it’s a mock term with no competition, ranking shouldn’t be hard at all. The keyword is SEOContestAtIIITHyderabad.

That’s about it for now. I’ll follow up if/when I get more details. Stay tuned!
